Wednesday | March 26, 2014 Evangeline Preliminary Fitness Meet Basile High School, 2835 2nd Street Basile, LA. 70515

The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (GCPFS) sponsors an Olympic-style statewide fitness competition that is designed to: 1. Encourage every school in the state to offer Physical Fitness as part of their daily curriculum; 2. Make sure each school has a certified P.E. instructor to oversee the course; 3. Measure the fitness level of Louisiana elementary school children statewide and compare results to other states. Louisiana's school children were tested in seven fitness categories: 1. 50-yard dash; 2. 600-yard run; 3. Standing Long-jump; 4. Pull-ups; 5. Curl-ups 6 Sit & Reach; 7. Shuttle Run. Thirty parishes are currently involved in the program bringing the state's total to more than 200,000 students.

Louisiana's Fitness Program concentrates on the following objectives:

  1. Assess the fitness levels in grades three, four and five;
  2. Study the children's pattern of participation in physical activity;
  3. Determine the factors affecting a child's fitness level;

After schools are selected, school administrators or physical education teachers were contacted and asked to provide a list of classrooms. Three packets of information about the program was distributed to each school. Each packet contained a letter to the principal or contact person further explaining the competition and evaluation protocol; a physical education specialist survey, certificates of appreciation, and a card for recording test results. The contact person must secure 6-12 adult volunteers to assist with organizing students. Volunteers do not administer tests. The contact person marked the course for the 600-Yard Run, provide erasers for the Shuttle Run, and Pull-ups bars.

Students performed the identical fitness tests acquired from the President's Challenge. Tests  consist of: the 50-yard Dash, Sit and Reach, Pull-ups, the Shuttle Run, Curl-ups (sit-ups), Standing Long Jump, and the 600-Yard Run. Instructions on how to execute each test properly were included in the packet. The top scores from three boys and girls qualified them for the Elementary Championship Fitness Meet held in Baton Rouge.
