Wednesday | April 16, 2014 Livingston Parish Fitness Meet South Walker High School

This year's version of the Elementary Fitness Meet will be held on April 28, 2012 at the LSU Field House on the Baton Rouge Campus of LSU. Thirty parishes are slated to paricipate in the 19 annual event that will be televised on Cox cable channels across Acadiana.

The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (GCPFS) designed the competition to encourage every school in the state to offer physical fitness as part of their daily curricula, and make sure each school has a certified P.E. instructor to oversee the course.

Louisiana's school children compete in seven fitness categories:

  1. 50-yard dash
  2. 600-yard run
  3. Standing Long-jump
  4. Pull-ups
  5. Curl-ups
  6. Sit & Reach
  7. Shuttle Run

Thirty parishes are currently involved in the program bringing the state's total to more than 200,000 students. After schools are selected, school administrators or physical education teachers were contacted and asked to provide a list of classrooms. Three packets of information about the program were distributed to each school. Each packet contained a letter to the principal or contact person further explaining the competition and evaluation protocol; a physical education specialist survey, certificates of appreciation, and a card for recording test results. The contact person must secure 6-12 adult volunteers to assist with organizing students. Volunteers do not administer tests. The contact person marked the course for the 600-Yard Run, provide erasers for the Shuttle Run, and Pull-ups bars. The top scores from three boys and girls qualified them for the Elementary Championship Fitness Meet held in Baton Rouge.

The winning parish will get a championship plaque to be displayed at their local school board office, individual trophies and medals for each participant, a pictured billboard in a city of their choice, visit the state capitol to be introduced before the legislature and get formal, personal congratulations from the Governor.
