Confirmation and Determination of the Lancefield antigen of a Pure Isolate of Streptococcus

Beta-hemolytic Streptococcus

  • Laboratory Location – Central Laboratory
  • CPT Code – 87077, 87147 x 5
  • Synonyms –Beta-hemolytic Streptococcus, Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A), Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B)
  • Test Description - Confirmatory test for Beta-hemolytic Streptococcus and determination of the Lancefield antigen for epidemiological purposes.

Possible Results

  • Beta-hemolytic Streptococcus
  • Non-Hemolytic Streptococcus Group (a,b,c,f and g) is the final result for the specimen

  • N/A

Specimen Requirements

  • Specimen Type - Any actively growing, pure culture of Streptococcus from any sterile source.
  • Specimen Container(s) - Agar slant in screw cap tube that will support growth of the organism. Media must be in date. Speciments must be labeled to match the lab submission form (i.e. patient's name, source, date and time of collection)

Storage and Transport Instructions

Specimens can be maintained at ambient temperatures or refrigerated temperatures (2°C to 37°C) to protest viability. Do not freeze or ship frozen. The specimen should be received in the State Lab as soon as possible after the original collection date to allow for prompt epidemiological investigation.

Causes for Rejection

  • Leaking or broken container
  • Media is past the expiration date
  • The Lab form 93 missing required information
  • No lab slip received with specimen

Culture submitted must be pure and viable
