First Confirmed Cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) Infection in the United States, Updated Information on the Epidemiology of MERS-CoV Infection, and Guidance for the Public, Clinicians, and Public Health Authorities - May 2014 (MMWR - CDC)
The Louisiana Department of Health relies upon selected sentinel health practitioners across the state to report the number of visits consistent with an influenza-like illness (ILI): fever over 100°F AND cough and/or sore throat. Providers are supplied with specimen collection kits, and submit samples to the state Public Health Laboratory for influenza PCR testing. Reports are used to estimate the state's ILI rate and the magnitude of the state's influenza activity. Reports represent only the distribution of flu in the state, not an actual count of all flu cases statewide.
Please click on the summary Dr. Ratard compiled regarding influenza activity this year compared to 2009.
Influenza A H1N1 pdm09 is the predominant strain in Louisiana this year, the same as the 2009 pandemic
We have started Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) surveillance throughout the state. If you have a
patient in your facility that is critically ill and having a sample tested at the state public health lab, please
send the below information to Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Attn: Julie Hand. We prefer to have this
information as soon as possible rather than trying to obtain it after the lab results are released.
- Face Sheet
- History and Physical
- Rapid results
- Discharge summary (when available)
Specimens acceptable for subtyping at the state public health lab are those from hospitalized, critically ill
patients. Please do not submit specimens from uncomplicated influenza-like illness or from emergency
department visits. These requirements do not apply if you are part of our sentinel surveillance program.
