Newborn Screening ProgramThis program aims to eliminate or reduce mortality, morbidity and disabilities by early detection and treatment of the disorders included in the newborn screening panel. The program now screens for all disorders recommended by the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG) except for hearing loss.

Filter Paper Specimen Collection Training
The Genetic Diseases Program is committed to reducing the number of newborn screening specimens (Filter paper Lab-10 specimens) rejected as unsatisfactory for testing. In collaboration with the Office of Public Health's regional hospital nurse coordinators, in-service training and education on the proper technique for sample collection is now available statewide. To assist with training, copies of the DVD, CLSI Newborn Screening Collection can be borrowed for viewing. To request in-service training and/or the loan of the DVD, please contact the Genetic Diseases Program office at 504-568-8254.
