Hearing loss is the most common birth defect, occurring at a rate of 1-3 in every 1000 births. The goal of the Louisiana Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (LA EHDI) is to ensure that all infants who are deaf or hard of hearing can achieve their maximum potential through early screening, detection and intervention. In 1999, Identification of Hearing Impairment in Infants Law was passed which mandates hearing screening on all newborns prior to hospital discharge and is being implemented in Louisiana hospitals.
LA EHDI promotes the national EHDI goals and timelines recommended by the CDC, AAP, JCIH, ASHA, AAA, HRSA/MCHB, NIH/NIDCD and other organizations:
