National Health Service Corps Score Information from the Federal Bureau of Primary Health Care in response to Hurricane Katrina
About the Bureau's National Health Service Corps Initiative The National Health Service Corps is a federal program developed to supply rural and underserved communities with health professionals dedicated to providing services to the most needy communities throughout the country.
In Summer 2004, the Bureau began an initiative to increase Louisiana's use of the National Health Service Corps as a recruitment and retention tool. Historically, Louisiana has not taken full advantage of the monies and incentives provided by the federal government through the National Health Service Corps. The Bureau set out to discover why Louisiana was leaving this money on the table year after and to develop strategies to reverse the problem.
The Bureau's National Health Service Corps Initiative consists of efforts to inform Louisiana providers about the benefits of the program through training, technical assistance, and enrollment events. Through a pilot project, five Louisiana communities were selected to participate with a consultant to develop community site profiles with input from non-medical individuals in the community. The goal of this pilot project was to develop community profiles that attract health professionals to underserved areas by creating a larger picture that keeps in mind recruitment and retention of the whole family-- practitioner, spouse and children. These profiles provide information on schools, faith-based organizations, local festivals, civic groups, recreation and other elements of the local lifestyle as well as information about the medical community.
The following links provide information on the National Health Service Corps applicaiton process, sample community site profiles and maps of eligible areas for National Health Service Corps support.
